As a sleep therapist I can safely say that external factors can dramatically influence the balance of our sleep-wake system. Our bedroom set up dramatically affects the quantity and quality of our sleep.
Of late my home office is sadly in my bedroom. I do combat negative ions from all the electrical appliances with a salt lamp which seems to work well, i know that before I had one the emissions of positive ions didn't allow my sleep to reach it's potential and I found myself in and out of light sleep waking up cranky.
The other thing that makes for a sleep safe bedroom is the surface which we rest our body, "the mattress". During the summer months, especially in Tel Aviv, it's party time for dust mites that will congregate in our mattresses and pillows.
Gross I know, but dust mites, unlike bed bugs, don’t feed directly on us. They do need warm temperatures and high humidity to live which is perfect for Tel Aviv. They only cease to reproduce if humidity is lower than 60% which means combating this with air-con 24/7. I didn't want to fork out for a new mattress but knew it needed a clean. I guess the proof is in the pudding (or filter in this case) A high powered vacuum sucked up what you see in the photo removing all possible dust mite excrement, dead skins cells, sweat residue, bacteria and probably lots of cat cooties from my mattress :) Result, a fresher mattress and better nights sleep for sure!
