Simple sensory play

July 12, 2019

Sensory activities can be extremely beneficial for all preschool children, but they are of particular value for children with autism. When engaging in these activities my goal is stimulate all of the five senses – touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing.

In a home treatment session I decided to use organic rice flakes with tin pouring utensils. The flakes were accepted well, coarse to the touch, crunchy, and the sound they made on the side of the box and on the tin cups had a musical effect allowing this three year old to stay focused and calm throughout the activity.

The benefits of sensory activities for children with autism

Engaging children with autism in sensory activities is beneficial in several ways, as it can help with:

  • Stimulating the brain, creating neural pathways and improving sensory processing systems

  • Improving social skills such as communication and cooperation

  • Improving coordination, as well as fine/gross motor skills

  • Calming children down when they are agitated
